Show Horses : Moving Target
Season 4, episode 4
Watched Sept 25, 2024

There is a lot to unpack in last night's episode of Slow Horses titled Moving Target. We had a trickle of information from the numerous threads in play. What with the French assassin having survived Jackson Lamb's taxi assault in episode 3, now in pursuit of Sam 'Bagman' Chapman to finish the job Harkness (his boss) was contracted to do.

We also get a very nearly grisly scene with Harkness coming face to face with the man who hired his team, known simply as his Highness, in a hotel room. All chillingly reminiscent of the assassination of journalist Jamal Khashoggi, back in 2018. Harkness weasels his way out to fight another day, or at the very least, till midnight. But now we know who hired Harkness and if not why, certainly we have an inkling of this being international.

Meanwhile, River is on his way back to London heading for his grandfather's home, and a childhood treasure box hidden in the bottom of a wardrobe. Another clue connecting him, David, and Sam Chapman to a mysterious women at Les Arbres and Harkness. One that David Cartwright threw the rule book out the window to rescue, back in the day, with the bribe of a fully loaded Volvo estate. Weapons, cash, fake IDs and passports, all of which has now come back to haunt both Cartwright and Chapman.

The woman? All the subtext points to her being David Cartwright's daughter and, therefore, River's mother. So if she was captive at the chateau, another baby machine, does this also mean River was there too, as a child? His father, Frank Harkness?

All this going on while Taverner, Lamb, and Flyte all consume plenty of screen time chasing leads, wayward characters, and loose ends.

And finally, in the end, does Flyte get her man? Probably in more ways than one, as she nabs River at his grandfather's house.
